Panthers return to GLVC tournament and face top seed McKendree
The Drury Panthers are back in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament and face McKendree on Sunday at 2:30 pm in Lebanon, Illinois.
Drury ended the regular season 9-7-2, 7-6-2 in the GLVC, and finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings. The Panthers are the eighth seed on the tournament bracket. Drury played four straight road games to end the regular season and went 2-1-1 in that stretch, falling in their final match 1-0 at Illinois Springfield last Sunday.
McKendree is the top seed after going 13-2-2 and 12-1-2 in the league. The Bearcats are also coming off of a loss falling at home to Maryville 1-0 on Sunday. McKendree enters the league quarterfinals ranked 24th in NCAA-II.
Sunday's quarterfinal game will feature two of the top goal-scorers in the league as Drury sophomore
Jamie O'Brien and McKendree's James Stone are both tied for the conference lead with 11 goals. O'Brien has scored four game-winners for the Panthers and ranks fourth in the GLVC with 44 shots.
McKendree won the regular season meeting with a 2-1 win at Drury on Oct. 4. The Bearcats scored a first-half goal from Lukas Vaiciunas, then took a 2-0 lead with a goal on a penalty kick by James Stone early in the second half. O'Brien's goal in the 77th minute gave the Panthers a chance to draw even and Drury put up two shots in the final 10 minutes to could not get the equalizer.
The winner of Sunday's game advances to the GLVC semifinals on Friday in Indianapolis and will the play winner of fourth-seeded Indianapolis (12-4-1, 10-4-1) and fifth-seeded Southern Indiana (8-6-3, 8-5-2). The other semifinal match-ups include #2 Bellarmine (13-0-4, 10-0-4) against number seven Lindenwood (7-6-4, 6-5-4), and third-seeded Maryville (14-2-2, 11-2-2) versus number six Illinois Springfield (9-7-2, 7-6-2). The GLVC championship game is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 2:30 pm (Central) in Indianapolis.
