Drury open 2019 at Ouachita Baptist
Drury's softball team will open the 2019 season this weekend in the Ronnie Hawkins Memorial Invitational hosted by Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Panthers start the tournament against Southwest Baptist on Saturday at 9 a.m., then take on the University of Texas at Tyler at 11 a.m. On Sunday, Drury plays Christian Brothers at 9 a.m. then concludes the tournament against Ouachita Baptist at 1 p.m.
 
Drury enters the year with head coach Jerry Breaux starting his second season guiding the program and last year led the Panthers to a 20-24 record, a 13-game improvement from 2017. He is in his 26th year overall as a collegiate head coach and brings a 759-423-2 career record into 2019.
 
Drury returns first team all-conference outfielder Jacy Ummel in addition to nine other letter winners. Ummel,  a junior from Hutchison, Kansas, hit .366 with one home run, and 22 runs batted in in her first season with the Panthers last year. She also hit 15 doubles and stole 10 bases. Kasey Cazares was also a newcomer to Drury's team last year, and the junior from Calexico, California led the pitching staff with a 9-8 record, one save, and a 2.82 ERA.
 
The February 2nd start date for the Panthers is the team's earliest season opener in program history.
 
Following their season-opening tournament, Drury travels to San Antonio for the St. Mary's Classic Feb. 8-10 where the Panthers will play five games in three days and face a pair of nationally ranked teams. Drury's 2019 home opener is Feb. 23 when they host Pittsburg State at Thompson Field.
