SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Drury fell in their home opener to Pittsburg State 12-8, then had the second half of their doubleheader canceled by rain on Friday at Thompson Field in Springfield.

The Panthers ended the day with a 5-4 record while the Gorillas improved to 5-6.

Errors were Drury's undoing as five miscues cost the Panthers and led to eight unearned runs. The Panthers scored three times in the second inning highlighted by a
Serenity Healy home run as Drury took a 3-1 lead.

The Panthers had another three-run frame in the fourth and went up 6-4, but Pittsburg State took the lead for good scoring five times in the fifth inning taking advantage of two walks and a misplayed ball at home plate that led to two runs.

Kaelie Smith went 2 for 4 at the plate for Drury with two runs, an RBI and a triple.
Madison Hecker also had two hits for the Panthers while
Megan Holmes hit her second home run of the year and drove in three.

Friday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved up a day with the threat of heavy rain in the forecast.

Drury returns to the field on Sunday when they host Lincoln for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Thompson Field.
