SPRINGFIELD – Drury's
Jacy Ummel had a game winning hit and a game tying hit to help the Drury softball Panthers to a pair of 4-3 come from behind wins over Missouri Western in non-conference action Tuesday at Thompson Field.
The Panthers improved to 9-4 and Missouri Western fell to 9-7.
In the opener, Drury took a 2-1 lead when
Megan Holmes crushed her team leading third homer of the year, a two run shot to right field in the opening inning. Western went back on top in the second, plating a pair of runs on RBI double for a 3-2 edge. After three scoreless innings of action, a two out bases loaded hit to second base by
Samantha Miller scored
Kinzy Mathis to tie it up in the seventh. Ummel followed up with a clutch RBI single to left to plate pinch runner
Courtney Kinion and give the Panthers a 4-3 victory.
Daisy Dudek (4-1) earned the win for the Panthers and threw the final inning to seal the contest. Morgan Frost went 3-for-4 with a run for the Griffons who finished with eight hits and left seven on.
In the nightcap, the Griffons took an early 3-0 lead crossing a run in the opening frame and tacking on two more in the second. An RBI single up the middle by
Devin Hale scored
Madoline Seumalo to get the Panthers on the board in the fourth.
In the sixth the Panthers clawed closer when
Serenity Healy smoked a ball to left center for an RBI double to score Hale and cut the Western lead to 3-2. Ummel proved she was the player you wanted at the plate again when she tied the game up in the seventh on an RBI single to score Kinion. With two outs Seumalo hit a solid shot to right field to bring home Ummel for the Panthers second come from behind 4-3 victory on the day.
Dudek earned her second victory of the day on the hill and allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings of relief action. Ummel went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored a run on the day and Holmes went 3-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs and scored a run.
The Panthers will host Southwest Baptist in a noon doubleheader on Friday, March 1 at Thompson Field with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
