SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Drury Panthers opened play at the St. Mary's College Classic with a split of their first two games. A three run double from
Megan Holmes in the bottom of the sixth gave Drury a 9-8 win in the nightcap over Eastern New Mexico. The Panthers nearly come back in the opener vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville before falling 9-8.
In the nightcap, the Panthers trailed 7-1 after three innings but rallied to score two runs in the fourth and sealed the win with a huge sixth inning by scoring six runs on five hits and two errors. Holmes led the Panthers offensively and finished the game going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Both teams finished with 11 hits each.
In the opener, Kingsville scored a pair of runs in the opening inning off RBIs singles before the Panthers knotted it up with their own RBI singles in the top of the third (
Madoline Seumalo and Jace Ummel). The Javelinas went back up for good with a run in the bottom of third, then added a two run homer in the fourth and scored four runs on five hits in the sixth take a 9-3 lead.
The Panthers who scored 5 runs on 4 hits and two errors in the top of the seventh rallied to within a run and made in intresting. Seumalo, who finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the game, blasted a two run shot to start the scoring rally.
Devin Hale, a junior transfer from Owasso, Oklahoma then singled in
Kinzy Mathis to cut the lead to 9-6.
Madison Hecker would account the Panthers final two runs with a two RBI single.
Kingsville, who outhit the Panthers 15-13, was led by Jory Cervantes who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Megan Holmes went 2-for-3 with a solo shot in the sixth for the Panthers.
The Panthers play two more games in the tournament on Saturday as they take on St. Edward's at 10 a.m. and 9
th ranked Texas A&M-Commerce at 12:15 p.m. Drury will wrap up action at the tournament with a single game on Sunday vs. 14
th ranked Tarleton State with first pitch set for 10 a.m.
