DU Softball Splits Sunday Pair in Spring Break Play

CLERMONT, Fla. -  The Drury Softball Panthers split a pair, winning the opener 9-0 over Nyack College before dropping the nightcap 6-5 to Ferris State at Hancock Park Field on Sunday.

The Panthers improved to 15-4 while Nyack fell to 1-4 and Ferris State dropped to 4-7.

Drury led 5-0 after 2 innings in the opener vs. Nyack.  The Panthers capitalized on a bases loaded walk and a passed ball in the opening frame.  Drury then added three more runs in the second on an RBI sac fly from Megan Holmes and a single that plated two runs off the bat of Madoline Seumalo.

The Panthers sealed the contest with four runs in the fourth, which included a pair of RBI doubles from Holmes and Jacy Ummel, for a 9-0 run rule win.

Ummel finished 3-for-3 and scored three runs with one RBI in the Panthers 10 hit output.  Kasey Cazares improved to 3-1 in the win and threw four innings and allowed just two hits.

In game two, Ferris State scored the first five runs of the contest before the Panthers stuck three on the board in the bottom of the second.  Madison Hecker had an RBI single and DU had a pair of RBI sac flies.

Ummel finished 2-for-3 in the game and went 5-for-6 on the day.  Hailley Greenough (2-1) finished the final five innings of the game and received the loss.

Ferris State homered in the fourth to make it a 6-3 Bulldog lead.  An error and an RBI single by Holmes in the bottom half of the fourth would draw the Panthers to within a run, but neither team was able to cross a run in the final three innings of action.

The Panthers next scheduled contest is on Tuesday, March 12 when they play Urbana at 2:45 pm and then will take on CAL PA at 5 p.m. (CST) in Clermont, Florida.
