Drury holds off Quincy in game one, but falls short in game two

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Drury hung on for a 10-9 win in game one of a doubleheader against Quincy but fell in game two 6-3 to split with the Hawks on Friday at Thompson Field in Springfield.

The Panthers ended the day 32-15 and 11-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Quincy went to 18-22 and 8-14 in the league.

In game one, Kinzy Mathis belted a pair of three-run home runs becoming the 11th player in program history, and the first since 2015, to have a multi-home run game as she took pitches over the fence in the first two innings. Her three-run shot in the first gave Drury a 3-2 lead, and she opened up a 6-2 margin for the Panthers with a homer in the second inning.

Quincy scored four runs in the third to tie the game at 6-6, but Drury took the lead back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning scoring on a ground ball by Jacy Ummel and a throwing error by Hawks catcher Remi Ferguson.

Quincy pulled within a run, 10-9, after a two-run home run by Megan Sharpshair with two out in the seventh, but Kasey Cazares (12-3) got Audrey Hermann to fly out to centerfield to end the game.

Drury second baseman Kaelie Smith went 4 for 4 with three runs, two runs batted in and a double while Mathis went 3 for 4 with six RBI's.

Quincy frustrated Drury hitters in game two as the Panthers stranded 11 runners including seven in scoring position.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI-double by Morgan Heckman, but Drury threatened in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off triple by Kaelie Smith. Smith was left stranded at third and an inning later, Drury had the bases loaded with no outs and again could not push home a run.

Quincy took advantage of a two-out error in the fifth to help open up a 4-0 lead, then Drury got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on Devin Hale's RBI single. The Panthers left the bases loaded in that frame as well, though, but did push home two more runs in the bottom of the seventh before falling short 6-3.

Mathis went 3 for 4 for the Panthers with two runs scored and a double. She ended the day going 6 for 8 with two home runs, six RBI's, and four runs scored. Smith went 2 for 4 in game two and also went 6 for 8 on the day.

Hailly Greenough (6-6) took the loss for Drury while MacKenzie Collier (5-6) got the win for Quincy going all seven innings allowing 10 hits, three runs, and four walks with six strikeouts.

The Panthers continue their homestand on Saturday when they host Truman State in a doubleheader starting at noon at Thompson Field.
