Panthers split doubleheader at Illinois Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- Drury picked up a 5-2 win in game one but were blanked in game two 3-0 as they split a doubleheader at Illinois Springfield on Sunday at the Land of Lincoln Softball Complex in Springfield, Illinois.
 
The Panthers ended the day 27-12 and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Prairie Stars went to 20-16 and 9-5 in the GLVC.
 
In game one, Drury took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on Jacy Ummel's two-run homer and tacked on another run an inning later on a solo home run from Megan Holmes. The Panthers built a 5-1 lead in the sixth as Kinzy Mathis drove in two runs with a single.
 
Ummel ended the game going 2 for 3 with her second home run of the year while Holmes also went 2 for 3 and her home run was her fourth of the season.
 
Hailly Greenough (6-4) got the win going seven innings allowing five hits and two runs with five walks and two strikeouts. Payton Long (7-3) took the loss for Illinois Springfield.
 
Jaycee Craver (11-10) fired a six-hit shutout for the Prairie Stars in game two as she went seven innings allowing six hits, no runs, no walks, and she struck out eight in the win.
 
Calla Wickenhauser hit a three-run home run in the first inning for the only scoring in the game. Drury starter Kasey Cazares (8-3) shut out Illinois Springfield for the rest of the contest and went six innings allowing six hits and three runs with four walks and eight strikeouts but took the loss.
 
The Panthers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Illinois Springfield ended the game on a fly ball to right field.
 
Drury returns to the road next weekend when they travel to Bellarmine for a doubleheader starting at 11 am (Central) in Louisville, Kentucky.
