SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– The Drury Panthers will make their first postseason appearance in seven years when they play 13th ranked Indianapolis in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament at 2 pm on Friday at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois (the GLVC tournament was originally slated to start on Thursday but pushed back one day by rain).
The Panthers are 34-21 and finished 12-14 in the GLVC to finish seventh in the league standings. Indianapolis is 42-12, went 20-6 and is seeded second in the league tournament. The winner of the game will advance to Game 7 of the double-elimination tournament and will play the winner of third-seeded Southern Indiana and number six seed Truman State at 4 pm on Friday. The loser of Drury/UIndy will play the loser of USI/TSU in Game 8 at 4 pm on Friday.
Drury's 34 wins are the second-most wins in the 12-year history of the program and the most since their 36 wins in 2012, the last year they made the tournament.
The Panthers enter the postseason carrying their longest losing streak of the year having dropped their last five games. Drury lost the second half of a doubleheader at Southwest Baptist last week and was swept at home in doubleheaders to Maryville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Prior to their current skid, the Panthers had not lost more than two in a row all year.
In the other opening round match-ups, top-seeded UMSL faces eighth-seeded Lewis, and number four Maryville takes on fifth-seeded Illinois Springfield.
The GLVC tournament continues with five games on Saturday starting at 11 am and concludes on Sunday with the championship round starting at noon and an if necessary game at 2 pm.
