DU softball splits twin bill vs. Upper Iowa Friday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —The Drury softball Panthers split a twin bill vs. Upper Iowa, winning the nightcap 6-1 after falling 4-2 in the opener at Thompson Field Friday. 

In the opener, both teams scratched across runs with Abby Tiemann stealing home for the Panthers.  Drury took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when a blast to left center by Grace King to allow Tiemann to score her second run of the game.

After a scoreless fourth frame, Upper Iowa belted an RBI double to right to go back on top 3-2 in the fifth.  The Peacocks punched home another run on an RBI double to left in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-2 final.

Kasey Cazares (3-2) had a career-high 11 K's in a losing effort and Emily Kisch (1-2) earned the win for Upper Iowa with six Ks.  Tiemann scored both runs for the Panthers with both teams finishing with five hits.

In the nightcap, Drury scored on an error in the bottom of the second and added two insurance runs in the third to make it 3-1, coming on a pair of RBI singles by Jace Ummel and King.  A pair of RBI hits in the Panther fifth, Abbey McAteer single and Madison Hecker with a two RBI triple made it a 6-1 Panther final.

Hecker went 2-for-2 in the contest with a pair of RBIs in the Panthers 11 hit attack.  Serenity Healy and McAteer each finished with a 2-for-3 game and each drove home one run.  Haylee Van Deventer (2-0) earned the win with four strikeouts to go the distance. 

Drury will conclude their three game series tomorrow at Thompson Field with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
