Tom Tewes struck out 13 batters in Drury's season opener vs. East Central

Drury Dozen- the top 12 moment's of '19-20: #12- Tewes strikes out 13 vs. East Central

7/2/2020 5:00:00 PM

The Drury Dozen is an annual list of our favorite moments of the year from Drury Athletics. The list is not necessarily the most significant events, but the special games and moments that we'll always associate with 2019-20.

The most significant moment, obviously, came on Mar. 11 when the sports world stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That halt robbed us of games and accomplishments that would have likely taken up several spots on this list.

We can take pride in the fact, however, that even though the year was cut short, what happened between Sept. 1, 2019, and Mar. 10, 2020, provided so many great moments in a variety of sports that it was still difficult to trim the list to just 12.

We'll provide honorable mention selections later in the countdown, but, for now, here is our first entry from 2019-20:

#12 – Tom Tewes sets a Drury record striking out 13 batters at East Central

Feb. 8, 2020 – Ozark, Mo.
Tom Tewes put himself in the record books in Drury's season opener as he struck out 13 batters in just 6.2 innings on Feb. 8, 2020, against East Central. The junior from Lincoln, Nebraska, allowed only two hits and one unearned run with two walks in a game originally scheduled on the road in Ada, Oklahoma, but moved to US Baseball Park in Ozark due to inclement weather.

Tewes' 13 strikeouts broke Drury's previous single-game mark of 11 held by five different pitchers and reached seven times. It also marked the 13th time in program history a pitcher reached double-figures in strikeouts during a game.

Tewes didn't figure in the decision, however, as East Central tied the game in the seventh. The Panthers took the lead in the eighth inning and added another run in the ninth to claim a 3-1 win in their season opener.

Tewes would be named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for that performance, and he ended the abbreviated season with a 2-2 record, and he recorded 43 strikeouts with just nine walks in only 28.2 innings.

The Panthers were 13-7 and coming off of a 4-3 win over a nationally ranked Missouri Southern team when the year came to an abrupt end.
