ROLLA, Mo. – A steal by Missouri S&T's Kevin Legardy led to a Kaden Froebe lay-up with 16 seconds left in regulation, giving the Miners a come-from-behind 67-66 win over the Panthers at Gibson Arena in Rolla on Thursday.
Drury had chances in the closing seconds, but
Conley Garrison's drive into the lane with six seconds remaining resulted in a travel violation when he lost his footing. Then the Panthers stole the inbounds pass, but
Malek Davis' three-point shot was off the mark, and a put-back attempt by Garrison bounced off of the rim as time expired.
"I'm proud of our guys," said Drury head coach
Steve Hesser. "I just told them that I could watch what I saw tonight as opposed to Tuesday night (a loss at home to Southwest Baptist). We took some steps in the right direction. We didn't get the result we wanted, obviously, but give S&T some credit for that."
The Panthers led 34-30 and surged to a 50-39 advantage with 12:12 remaining. The Miners rallied, however, and cut the margin to five, 53-48 with 7:54 left.
Missouri S&T drew even on a three-pointer by Julian Smith with 3:02 remaining knotting the score at 59-59. Drury still didn't surrender the lead as they went back up by two on free throws from Brandan Emmert on the next possession, and when the game was tied again, this time at 63-63, Garrison went 3-for-3 from the foul stripe with 1:42 to go putting the Panthers in front 66-63.
The Miners pulled back within one on free throws with 40 seconds remaining, then Legardy's steal set up the game-winning basket moments later.
Drury shot 36 percent from the field in the game, going 23 for 64, while Missouri S&T was 23 for 48, good for 48 percent.
Garrison finished the game with a game-high 27 points, but Drury's only other double-figure scorer was Emmert with 10.
Smith had 20 points to lead the Miners, while Mahamadou Kaba-Camera added 14 points and four blocked shots.
Drury dropped to 5-6 while Missouri S&T raised their record to 3-11.
The Panthers are in action again on Saturday when they play at Maryville for a 1 pm game in St. Louis, Missouri.
