SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury's defense held William Jewell to just 44 points as the third-ranked Lady Panthers improved to 15-1 with a 79-44 win over the Cardinals at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield on Tuesday.
Drury's win snapped William Jewell's four-game winning streak and dropped the Cardinals to 11-10.
Drury pulled away from William Jewell late in the first quarter to take a 20-9 lead after 10 minutes, then widened the margin with
Paige Robinson's tip-in at the buzzer that gave the Lady Panthers a 44-18 lead at halftime.
Robinson earned her third double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds, and the junior from Bethany, Illinois, added five assists.
William Jewell was held to just 32 percent shooting from the field, going 18 for 57, and they connected on only two of their 19 attempts from three-point range.
"I told our kids that I was really proud of the way they made adjustments defensively," said Drury head coach
Amy Eagan. "We needed to keep their ball-handlers in front of us, and I thought we did a good job of that. And rebounding, tonight, turned out to be a big key for us as we were able to limit their second-chance opportunities."
The Lady Panthers owned a 44-26 advantage in the rebounding department in Tuesday's game. In addition to Robinson's 10 rebounds,
Azia Lynch added eight boards to go with 12 points.
Drury shot 51 percent from the field in the game, going 30 for 59. They also connected on 14 of their 18 free-throw attempts.
The 44 points allowed by the Lady Panthers is the lowest total they have given up all year.
Claire Burch led William Jewell with 12 points.
The Lady Panthers head on the road for their next game as they travel to Illinois Springfield for a 4:30 pm game on Thursday.
