Drury opens GLVC play with doubleheader sweep of William Jewell

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Drury Panthers opened play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a doubleheader sweep of William Jewell. Drury won the first game 7-4, then got a solo home run from Rylee Kolb in the 11th inning to take game two 1-0.
 
The Panthers improved to 8-5 and 2-0 in the league while the Cardinals fell to 1-11 and 0-2 in the GLVC.
 
In game one, Drury trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth but scored four times to take control. Kinzy Mathis drove in two runs with a double that put the Panthers in front. Drury would get another run as Lauren Beier scored on a wild pitch, and they tacked on another on Abbey McAteer's single.
 
Mathis finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs and two runs batted in. Devin Hale was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
 
Karsyn Smith (1-0) got the win in relief for the Panthers.
 
Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the 11th inning until Rylee Kolb belted her third home run of the season to lead off the frame and win the contest for Drury.
 
Three DU pitchers held William Jewell scoreless surrendering only five hits. Haylee VanDeventer allowed two hits through four innings, Smith, after winning game one, worked six scoreless innings giving up only two hits, and Bailee Nixon (3-2) pitched a scoreless 11th inning to get the win. 
 
The Panthers are home again tomorrow to take on Rockhurst in a doubleheader starting at 4 pm at Thompson Field. Tuesday's games were originally scheduled for Sunday but postponed by rain.
