9th ranked Missouri Southern gets grand slam to get past Panthers

JOPLIN, Mo.— Ninth-ranked Missouri Southern State got a grand slam in the fourth inning to propel them to a 10-3 win over Drury at Warren Turner Field in Joplin on Tuesday.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 9-15, while the Lions lifted their record to 22-6.

The Panthers scored in the top of the first to take the lead as Jackson Dierenfeldt raced on home on a steal. An inning later, Dierenfeldt drove in a run with a single, and a Brant Schaffitzel bunt would score another run giving Drury a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers would not score again, though, and Missouri Southern went in front for good in the fourth inning on a grand slam from Tommy Stevenson. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the sixth and again in the eighth.

Tom Tewes (0-2) took the loss in relief for Drury, while Jacob Davis (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings of relief to get the win for MSSU.

Missouri Southern's Henry Kusiak went 4 for 5 with a home run and two runs batted in, while Stevenson was 2 for 4 and finished with five RBIs.

Dierenfeldt went 4 for 4 for the Panthers, with a run, an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk.

This weekend, Drury is back at home when they host 12th ranked Illinois Springfield in a four-game series starting Friday at 5 pm at US Baseball Park in Ozark, Missouri.
