Panthers split one-run games at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo.- Drury and Maryville split a pair of one-run games on Thursday in a doubleheader in St. Louis, and while both contests were decided by a single run, the two games were opposites. The Saints won the first game 1-0 in a game that featured a combined three hits; then the Panthers hung on to win game two 11-10.

Drury ended the day 20-8 and 13-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Maryville went to 11-8 and 9-5 in the league.

Drury starter Lauren Beier held Maryville to just one hit in game one, but the Saints pushed across a run in the first inning and hung on for a 1-0 win.

Beier (4-3) went six innings, and the only hit she allowed was a first-inning single that drove in a runner from second in the contest's lone run. Beier walked three and struck out four in the loss.

Maryville starter Alyssa Callans (8-3) got the complete-game shutout win going seven innings, surrendering two hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The Panthers threatened in the top of the seventh when Grace King hit a one-out double. Callans got a strikeout and a fly ball to center field to close out the game.

Drury was three outs away from a run-rule win in game two as they entered the bottom of the fifth with an 11-3 lead. Maryville stayed alive, however, with a two-run home run, then scored five runs in the sixth to pull within one, 11-10.

Drury's Lauren Beier went 2 for 4 at the plate with three runs, a double, and four runs batted in. Kinzy Mathis went 2 for 2 with a run and three RBI's.

Haylee Van Deventer pitched two scoreless to earn her first save of the year, while Karsyn Smith (6-0) got the win for the Panthers.

Drury continues their road trip on Saturday when they travel to McKendree for a doubleheader that starts at noon in Lebanon, Illinois.
