Drury splits a doubleheader at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.— Drury won the first game, then fell in their last at-bat in game two as they split a doubleheader at Truman State on Saturday in Kirksville, Missouri. The Panthers won game one 6-2, then a bottom of the seventh home run in game two denied them a sweep of the two games as the Bulldogs took the nightcap 12-11.

Drury moved their record to 11-20 and 11-16 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Truman State went to 5-25, and 5-18 in the GLVC.

The Panthers scored three runs in the third, then pulled away with three more runs in the seventh to win game one 6-2.

Clayton Engel, who homered three times against Truman State on Friday, went 2 for 2 in the game with a double, a run, an RBI, and two walks. He drove in the Panthers first run with a third-inning single and later scored in the same inning on a wild pitch. Nikko Calabro went 2 for 3 with two RBI's and a double.

Colby Childs (1-1) got the win in relief, going 3.1 innings allowing two hits and one run, with one walk and two strikeouts. Zachery Schneider (0-7) took the loss for Truman State.

Truman State won game two on Luke Turner's bottom of the seventh, two-run home run. The Bulldogs never led in the game until Turner's game-winning homer. Drury took a 5-0 lead with five runs in the second inning, but Truman State battled back to tie the contest at 6-6 in the fourth. The Panthers took control back, however, with three runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.

Despite the loss, Engel's bat stayed hot as the senior from Ozark went 2 for 4 with two runs, and he hit his fourth home run in three games. Engel is 7 for 10 at the plate with four homers and seven RBI's in his last three games.

Calabro went 3 for 3 with a double, home run, three runs scored, and three RBI's.

The two teams conclude the four-game series on Sunday at noon in Kirksville, Missouri.
