SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Drury snapped fifth-ranked Indianapolis' 25-game winning streak with a 1-0 win over the Greyhounds in the second game of a doubleheader as the Panthers split Saturday's twin-bill at Thompson Field in Springfield. Drury lost the first game in nine innings 3-2 but rebounded to hand UIndy their first conference loss of the year in game two.
Â
The Panthers ended the day 22-11 and 16-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis lost for the first time in league play and took the first defeat since March 17, going to 32-3 with a 21-1 record in the GLVC.
Â
Game one was pushed to extra innings when Drury scored in the bottom of the seventh.
Devin Hale's RBI-single drove in
Abbey McAteer to tie the game at 2-2. The Panthers loaded the bases after drawing even, but the Greyhounds got a ground ball to get out of the inning sending the game to extras.
Â
The game stayed deadlocked until the ninth when Kammie Foster drove in a run from second base to give Indianapolis a 3-2 lead.
Â
Kenzee Smith (15-0) pitched three scoreless of relief to get the win for the Greyhounds. Haylee Van Deventer (6-5) worked all nine innings for Drury and took the loss despite giving up eight hits, three runs, and only one earned run.
Â
The Panthers won game two on the strength of a four-hit shutout by
Karsyn Smith (8-0) and a walk-off double by
Lauren Beier.
Â
Smith kept her record perfect as she went the distance without giving up an extra-base hit and only surrendered eight base-runners. Her defense turned two double plays, and a diving catch by Drury centerfielder
Abby Tiemann in the top of the sixth helped nullify a lead-off walk.
Â
The Panthers got a one-walk in the seventh, then with two outs, Beier sent a ball to the fence in center, driving home
Kinzy Mathis from first base.
Â
Kenzee Smith (15-1) took her first loss of the year for the Greyhounds.
Â
Tiemann went 3 for 4 at the plate for Drury, while Mathis was 2 for 3 with a double, and Beier went 2 for 4.
Â
The Panthers play their final regular season home game on Sunday when they host Lewis at noon at Thompson Field.
