QUINCY, Ill.- Drury ended the regular season with a split of a doubleheader at Quincy, winning game one 4-1 but falling in 10 innings to the Hawks in game two 4-3 at Heinen Field in Quincy, Illinois on Sunday.
The Panthers went to 25-14, 19-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and they end the year in third place in the league standings. Quincy ended their season 20-24 and 12-16 in the league.
In game one, the Panthers took the lead with three runs in the third inning.
Kinzy Mathis and
Sydney Sneed both produced RBI singles, and
Megan Tersteeg's bases-loaded walk gave Drury a 3-0 lead. The Panthers went up 4-0 an inning later as
Devin Hale led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a ground ball by
Abby Tiemann.
Lauren Beier (5-5) got the win going four innings allowing three hits and one run with two walks and a strikeout.
Karsyn Smith pitched two innings to get her second save, and MacKenzie Collier (9-10) took the loss for the Hawks.
Drury was four outs away from sweeping Quincy, but the Hawks got a sixth-inning, two-run home run from Taylor Downen to tie the game at 3-3 and send the contest to extra innings. The Hawks broke through in the bottom of the 10
th, taking advantage of two Drury errors that helped load the bases with no outs. Audrey Herman's sacrifice fly down the line in right field produced the game-winning run.
Lauren Beier went 4 for 5 at the plate for the Panthers finishing with a double, a home run, a stolen base, and two RBI's.
Grace King went 2 for 5 with a home run.
Karsyn Smith took her first loss of the year, falling to 9-1 despite going four innings allowing only three hits, two runs, and one earned run, with no walks and two strikeouts.
The third-place finish marks the program's best finish ever when the league has played as a single division. In 2012, Drury was the first-place team in the GLVC's West Division in one of the three seasons the conference was split into divisions. Drury's previous best finish in the league standings was seventh in 2019.
The Panthers will advance to the GLVC Tournament as the third-seeded team on the bracket. The double-elimination tournament is May 6-9 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
