Panthers travel to Maryville for GLVC quarterfinals
The Panthers take on the third-seeded Maryville in the quarterfinals of the GLVC tournament on Sunday at 11 am in St. Louis.
Drury comes into the match on a two-game unbeaten run after consecutive 0-0 ties to end the season against Illinois Springfield and Lewis. Maryville is coming off a 1-1 tie with McKendree last Sunday.
Sunday's quarterfinal game is a rematch of a game played on Oct. 7 in Springfield. That contest ended in a 0-0 tie, with Drury outshooting the Saints 8-5 (3-1 on target). Goalkeeper Katie Nash was forced to make three saves for Maryville, while Drury keeper Kailin Knetzke made one. Saints midfielder Sara Lawler led the game in shots with two, forward Tori Calvert had the only shot on target for Maryville. For the Panthers, defender
Kourtney Tucker, and forwards
Tara Simon and
Christine Harpe had the shots on goal.
Drury is coming off back-to-back scoreless ties. The Panthers' defense is tied for the best defensive unit in the GLVC only giving up eight goals all season.
Kaitlin Knetzke's 11 shutouts leads the conference, and her 62 saves place her fifth in the GLVC. She is helped by a steady backline which includes
Andrea Camargo,
Katie Cole,
Kourtney Tucker,
Sophia Green, and
Rachel Dzarnowski. Camargo has helped on the offensive end as well, netting one goal and setting up one with an assist. Tucker has also been a playmaker as her two assists are tied for the team lead. While the scoring has not reached 2021 levels, the reigning GLVC Player of the Year
Elsa Gonzalez and Freshman of the Year
Tara Simon, lead the Panthers in scoring with four goals and one assist each. Midfielder
Keeley Combs is third on the team in scoring with one goal and two assists to her name.
Maryville comes into this match having the second-most potent attack in the GLVC, scoring 27 goals over the regular season. They are led by forward Ashlyne Hunt, whose seven goals place her fifth in the GLVC. Midfielder Lexi Gentry is second on the team in scoring with five goals and three assists. Forward Tori Calvert leads the Saints in assists with four, with forward Michaela Fairchild one behind. The Saints are tied with the Panthers for the best defensive record in the GLVC, only conceding eight goals. Goalkeeper Katie Nash has made 47 saves and kept nine shutouts. She is aided by a center-back partnership of Ulrika Bredin and Brynn Presley. The head coach of Maryville is former US Women's National team player Lori Chalupny.
