Drury uses 2nd quarter run to get past Florida Southern 97-74

LAKELAND, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Drury Lady Panthers outscored Florida Southern 29-7 in the second quarter on their way to a 97-74 win in Lakeland, Florida on Saturday.

The win completed a 2-0 trip to Florida for Drury and raised their record to 11-1. The Mocs dropped to 8-4.

The Lady Panthers trailed 20-18 after the first quarter, then turned the game around with a 15-2 run in the second period. Drury capped the first half with a three-pointer by freshman Rhi Gibbons just before the intermission buzzer that gave the Lady Panthers a 47-27 lead.

"We were able to make some things happen off of some turnovers we created, especially off of our press," said Drury head coach Amy Eagan. "We got some big minutes from our bench today and that helped as we are still battling illnesses and travel issues."

Drury held off Florida Southern and led by as much as 27 in the second half.

Kaylee DaMitz-Holt, fresh off of a 34-point game a day earlier, led the Lady Panthers again, scoring 20 points. The graduate student from Preston, Missouri went 3 for 4 from three-point range and 7 of 8 from the foul line while adding four assists. Alana Findley and Allie Clevenger both chipped in 16 points for Drury.

Drury's 97 points were a season-high and marked the fourth time this year they've topped 90 points in a game. The Lady Panthers shot 53 percent hitting 35 of 66 attempts, including a 9 for 18 performance from three-point range. Drury forced 24 turnovers against the Mocs, who went 27 for 55 from the field for 49 percent, but they hit on only 3 of 11 three-point tries.

Ashley Shell had a game-high 21 points for Florida Southern.

Drury will be idle until Jan. 5, when they return to action for a home game against McKendree at 5:45 pm in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
