SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Drury Panthers extended their winning to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of Maryville at Thompson Field on Saturday. The Panthers won game one 2-0, then took the second game 6-4.
Drury improved to 21-8 and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints fell to 12-11 and 7-3 in the league.
Kristina Bettis (13-1) fired a one-hit shutout in game one and won her eighth straight start giving the Panthers a 2-0 win. The junior from Swansea, Illinois, went seven innings and struck out eight batters while allowing only one walk.
Drury got a run in the second inning when
Gena Kulberg scored from third base on a wild pitch. The Panthers added to their lead with a solo home run in the fifth from
Kailyne Luna.
After allowing a first-inning run, Drury bounced back to grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame. The Panthers took a 4-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the third, scoring on a double steal and an RBI-single
Rylee Kolb.
The Saints scored two runs in the fifth to pull within a run, but Kolb added another RBI hit in the bottom half of the frame and the Panthers took a 6-3 lead with a sacrifice fly by
Camryn BeDell.
Drury hung on for the win as
Karsyn Smith went 1.2 innings for her first save.
Lauren Fiene (2-1) got the win for the Panthers, while Reagan (4-4) took the loss.
Drury is back at home tomorrow to host Missouri S&T for a noon doubleheader at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
