ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Drury Panthers started a weekend road trip with a doubleheader sweep at Lewis, winning game one 7-0, then taking game two 11-1 in five innings on Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois.
Drury improved to 32-11 and 18-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Panthers extended their winning streak to six games and stayed within two games in the lead in the GLVC. Lewis dropped to 21-23 and 7-15 in the league.
The Panthers scored two runs in the first inning, then blew the lead open with five runs in the seventh of game one.
Sydney Sneed put Drury on the board early with a two-run single in the opening frame. The Panthers then took advantage of five Lewis errors in the top of the seventh to score five runs on three hits.
Kristina Bettis (20-2) pitched her eighth shutout of the season as she allowed five hits and no walks while striking out nine. With the win, she becomes the first 20-game winner in program history for the Panthers.
Drury blasted three home runs and seven extra-base hits in the second game on their way to an 11-1 win in five innings. The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning, a run in the fourth, then five more in the fifth to put the game away.
Lauren Beier went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBI's, while
Meagan Mullaney and
Kailyne Luna both homered and had two RBI's.
Gracie Thomas doubled twice and was 2 for 3.
Karsyn Smith (6-4) got the win going five innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with two walks and five strikeouts. The game marked the fourth time this season the Panthers have won by run-rule.
Drury continues their road trip on Sunday as they take on Indianapolis, currently ranked third in NCAA-II, at 11 am (Central).
