ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Drury Panthers hung on for an 8-7 win at Maryville on Sunday to take three of the four games in a weekend series over the Saints in St. Louis.
Drury improved to 21-7 and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and sent Maryville to 14-13 and 4-4 in the league.
The Panthers scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and held a 7-2 lead going into the sixth. Maryville came back with two runs in the sixth inning, then two more in the eighth to pull within one.
Drury added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as the Panthers loaded the bases, and
Jackson Dierenfeldt scored on a wild pitch to give his team an 8-6 advantage.
The run proved to be decisive as Maryville struck back with a solo home run by Joey Polak in the bottom of the ninth. The Saints then put the tying run on base with two outs on a single from Elias Stevens. Reliever
Nate Boyle managed to get the final out on a ground ball as he picked up his third save.
Tyler Bastunas (1-0) got the win for Drury, and Geo Camfield (1-3) took the loss for Maryville.
Brant Schaffitzel went 3 for 5 at the plate for Drury and drove in two runs.
Nikko Calabro and
Stephen Randazzo both homered for the Panthers.
Drury returns to the road on Wednesday in a non-conference game against fourth-ranked Central Missouri. The first pitch is at 6 pm in Warrensburg.
