Prairie Stars edge Panthers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.– Illinois Springfield scored a goal midway through the first half and had that hold up for a 1-0 win over Drury on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois.

The Panthers had their 10-game unbeaten streak snapped and suffered their first loss since they fell to 25th-ranked Washburn in their season opener. Drury drops to 9-2-1 and 6-1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and despite the loss, will still hold a share of first place in the league standings.

The Prairie Stars went to 4-3-4 and 4-2-1 in the GLVC.

Madison Grandys had the game's only goal as she scored in the 22nd minute on an assist from Carolyne Mathenia. It was only the fifth goal allowed by the Panthers in 12 games and Grandys' third of the season.

Illinois Springfield's defense held Drury off in the second half, but the Panthers nearly pulled even. Elsa Gonzalez blasted a shot in the 55th minute that Prairie Stars goalkeeper Allison Mirimanian leaped to deflect high. Moments later, another Gonzalez shot hit the crossbar. Drury missed on a chance with 4:50 remaining on a cross that went through the box in front of the Illinois Springfield net and had one more opportunity in the closing seconds. The Panthers had a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining and put a ball toward the net as time expired, but it was easily scooped up by Mirimanian.

The Prairie Stars outshot Drury 9-5 and had five shots on goal to the Panthers two. Drury goalkeeper Kaitlin Knetzke had four saves in the loss.

The Panthers are idle until Oct. 15, when they host Southwest Baptist for a game at noon at Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex.
