NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Drury Lady Panthers went to 2-0 with the 64-59 win at Trevecca Nazarene on the second day of the Pops Duncan Classic in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday.
Drury took command in the second quarter, outscoring the Trojans 22-15 in the period, and capped the first 20 minutes with a half-court three-pointer at the halftime buzzer by
Beth Matas Martin that gave the Lady Panthers a 30-26 lead.
Drury led by as much as 11 in the fourth quarter and held off a Trevecca Nazarene team that returned three starters from a squad that went 22-10 and reached the second round of the NCAA-II National Tournament last year.
"They went right at us, and we made some mistakes at the end, but to do this on the road with a new team – I'm super proud," said Drury head coach
Kaci Bailey.
Matas Martin led the Lady Panthers with 15 points and five assists, and forward
Andjela Kremenovic scored all 12 of her points in the second half to help Drury pull away.
"Andjela is capable of doing that every night, and we had some people step up when we were in foul trouble," added Bailey. "
Sydney Hobbs didn't play a minute yesterday but came in because of fouls and because
Aiden Moxness was out, and she gave us six points. We tell everybody that they have to stay ready because you never know when your name is going to be called."
Drury shot 45 percent from the field, sinking 24 of 53 attempts, and went 5 for 12 from three-point range. They held Trevecca Nazarene to 29 percent shooting as the Trojans went 18 for 62 and just 2 for 16 from the three-point line.
Keeley Carter led Trevecca Nazarene with 24 points and eight rebounds. Konner Gambrell added 15 points and 14 boards. The Trojans dropped to 1-1 with the loss and had a 16-game home court winning streak snapped as they suffered their first defeat on their floor since Feb. 24, 2022.
The Lady Panthers play their regular season home opener on Thursday, Nov. 16 when they host Missouri Baptist for Hiland Dairy Kids Day at 11 a.m. in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
