SPRINGFIELD, Ill.– It took a late goal on a penalty kick from the eighth-ranked team in the nation, but Illinois Springfield scored in the 83
rd minute to get past Drury 1-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Quarterfinals in Springfield, Illinois, on Sunday.
The Prairie Stars, unbeaten in the GLVC regular season and the tournament's top seed, was awarded a penalty kick in the 83
rd minute and Riccardo Sandulli converted it for his fourth goal of the season.
That goal was the game's only score as the Panthers held Illinois Springfield to just two shots in the first half and only seven for the game. The Panthers had three shots in the contest, with one on goal, while the Prairie Stars had five on target.
Drury goalkeeper Tyler Frolick kept the Panthers in the game with four saves, while UIS keeper Andrea Scapolo made one save in the shutout win.
Drury, who was seeded eighth in the tournament, ends the year with a 4-9-5 record. The Prairie Stars advanced to the GLVC Semifinals with a 12-1-5 overall mark after they went 11-0-3 during league play in the regular season.
