SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury outscored Maryville 45-32 in the second half on their way to a 71-62 win over the Saints on Thursday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
The Panthers improved to 9-5 and 2-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Saints fell to 4-8 and 0-6 in the league.
Drury trailed 30-26 at halftime, then took their first lead of the game in the opening moments of the second going and had a 10-0 to surge ahead by five. The Panthers led by as much as 14 and held off Maryville down the stretch.
"The difference in the second half was our energy level," said Drury head coach
Chris Foster. "That was on me since we came out with a bit of a tentative game plan. But in the second half, we trapped some and got the guys flying around, which made a difference. I'm really proud of how our guys responded in the second half."
Logan Applegate scored a season-high 29 points, with 19 points coming in the second half. The sophomore from Nevada, Missouri also had four steals while going 9 for 13 from the field, 6 of 9 from three-point range, and went 5 for 6 from the free throw line.
"Logan did a good job of hitting shots and later in the second half when the defense stuck to him, we were able to the get the ball inside," added Foster.
Juok Riak scored 16 points for Drury and added seven rebounds.
The Panthers shot 45 percent from the field, going 25 for 56 and they connected on 9 of their 23 three-point attempts. Maryville shot 40 percent, hitting 23 of 58 attempts, but went just 4 for 20 from three-point range.
Luke Williams led Maryville with 11 points.
Drury is back at home on Saturday when they host Missouri S&T for a 1 pm tipoff in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
