SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury guard
Beth Matas Martin hit a pull-up jumper with 3.3 seconds left to give the Lady Panthers a 67-65 win over Maryville on Thursday night in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Drury improved to 10-4 and 5-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Saints dropped to 6-8 and 2-5 in the GLVC.
Matas Martin's shot broke a 65-65 time, but Maryville still had a chance in the closing seconds. The Saints inbounded from the sideline and got the ball to forward Karlee Feldman in the middle of the lane. Feldman could not get a clean shot away and the final horn sounded on a loose ball under the basket.
Drury led 41-30 at halftime, then built a 19-point lead midway through the third quarter. The Saints came charging back and ended the third period on a 10-0 run, then took the lead, 62-61, on a Carsyn Fearday lay-up with 3:35 left in fourth quarter. The game saw four lead changes and one tie down the stretch.
"We told the team at halftime that Maryville is a good team and they're going to make a run; we just didn't know when," said Drury head coach
Kaci Bailey. "We needed to handle that, and you could see us start to panic. I told them (in the fourth quarter) we were just in this situation at Illinois Springfield (last week), and we've learned from that…so take a deep breath and get under control. I thought we did and made enough plays late to win it."
Matas Martin finished with 20 points and surpassed the 1,000 career point total in college career. The graduate student from Spain played two seasons at Quincy before transferring to Drury and reached the milestone in her third season at the four-year college level.
Sophomore forward
Reese Schaaf had a double-double for the second straight game as the El Dorado Springs native had 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
Madyson Rigdon scored 17 points off the bench to lead Maryville.
Drury's win snapped the Saints four-game winning streak.
The Lady Panthers conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday when they host Missouri S&T for a 3 pm game at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
