Drury's late-inning rally falls short vs. Maryville

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury's late-inning run fell short as Maryville held off the Panthers 8-4 at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park on Sunday.

The Saints took sole possession of second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as they improved to 31-15 and 23-9 in the league. Drury went to 25-20 and 22-10 in the GLVC.

Maryville took the lead with four runs in the second inning and built a 7-0 lead after five frames.

The Panthers started their comeback in the sixth, sparked by a solo home run from Luke Burk. The homer was his 15th of the year and tied him for Drury's career lead with Clayton Engel's career total of 25. Drury added two more runs in the inning as Tyler Bastunas drove in a run with a ground ball, then Landon Willbrand's single produced another score.

The Panthers pulled to within three runs of the lead in the seventh on a Ryker Harrington RBI single.

Maryville added an insurance run in the eighth, and held Drury off the scoreboard in the final two innings.

Braden Smith (1-1) got the win in the start for the Saints as he pitched five scoreless innings to start the game. JD Whitter (1-3) took the loss for Drury.

Burk went 2 for 4 with a home run, double and two runs scored. Michael Gould was 3 for 3 with four RBIs for Maryville.

The Panthers end the regular season next week when they play a four-game series at Southwest Baptist May 2-4 in Bolivar.
