Panthers get set to host Drury Invitational
Drury had a successful opening weekend in the Midwestern St. Invitational winning three of their first four games. The Panthers are now gearing up to host the Drury Invitational from September 12 through September 14 with six teams from five different conferences.
 
Last weekend, the Panthers beat Southern Arkansas (3-0), Northwestern Oklahoma St. (3-1), and Midwestern St. (3-1) last weekend, with their lone loss coming to Western New Mexico, 3-2.
 
Mailie Chretien shined throughout the weekend. The Catawba transfer had 57 kills and 58 digs. In the Midwestern St. match, she was responsible for 20.5 points. Lauren Tyler recorded 139 assists in 16 sets played, with 21 digs in the Western New Mexico game. Freshman Libero, Kim Quinit had 66 digs in her first weekend of college volleyball, 27 of them coming against Midwestern State.
 
The Panthers open their weekend against seventh-ranked Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs come into this weekend with a 4-0 record. They played in the West Florida Invitational last weekend and did not lose a single set. Saari Kuehl led the Mustangs throughout the weekend with 51 kills. SW Minn St's setter, Sydney Thein registered 151 assists through the four matches. Drury and SMSU have played five times before. The Mustangs have taken the last two that were played in 2023 and 2022 both in 3-0 wins. Drury's last win was in 1993 a five-setter.
 
Drury opens their Saturday slate with Southern Nazarene. The Storm come into the Drury Invitational with a 1-3 record. Southern Nazarene played in the Texas A&M Kingsville Tournament. The Storm's lone win came against Missouri Southern in five sets. Riley Richardson led SNU with 29 kills. Emma Grace Moddelmog recorded 102 assists in 16 sets. The Panthers and Storm have played three times before this weekend and the Storm hold a 2-1 advantage, with wins in 2023 and 2022. Drury got their lone win in 2019 by a score of 3-0.
 
The final match for Drury on Saturday is against a newcomer to Division II, Roosevelt. The Lakers enter this weekend with a 1-3 record. Roosevelt played against four regional opponents in the opening weekend of the season. The Lakers only beat Malone with a score of 3-1. Viktoria Marysheva had 41 kills for the Lakers. Zoe Hutchinson played 13 sets for Roosevelt and reached 100 assists and 29 digs. This will be the first matchup for the Lakers and Panthers.
 
The final match of the Drury Invitational will be played between the Panthers and the Newman Jets. Newman is the only team in the event that is winless. The Jets played four matches in Austin, Texas last weekend. Ozioma Ajekwu did record 46 kills for Newman with Avery Dempsey registering 65 assists on the weekend. Dempsey and Madalyn Hoot split time at the setter position last weekend with Hoot getting 60 assists. Drury and Newman have played two times before with both of them going to the Panthers. The last match was played in 2022 with Drury winning 3-0.
 
The first match of the Drury Invitational will take place on September 12 at 4 pm when Rockhurst takes on Southern Nazarene. All games will be live streamed on the GLVCSN.
