SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury men's soccer battled for a 2-1 win over Lewis in its first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup of the weekend.
The first half started in Drury's favor.
Joe Loughnane opened the half with a shot that was blocked in the second minute. After a string of corner kicks,
Rian Mulherin served a ball into the box that
Carson Morgan finished in the seventh minute. Lewis responded with a shot in the eighth minute that was blocked by the Panther defense.
Later in the first half,
Sergio Aznar had a shot saved by the Flyers' goalkeeper in the 36
th minute.
Camden Meyer made a save in the 41
st minute to preserve the 1-0 lead. Morgan played a ball through to freshman
Dane Prost, who chipped the goalkeeper in the 44
th minute to make it 2-0. The Panthers went into the break up two goals.
The Flyers looked to get back into the game early in the second half with two shots in the first four minutes. Morgan had a crucial block on a Lewis shot in the 54
th minute. The Panthers were given a free kick in the 55
th minute, which Loughnane missed just right of the net. Lewis got on the board in the 63
rd minute after the Panthers couldn't clear the ball out of their defensive half.
Drury continued to defend Lewis's attacks, with Meyer making two crucial saves in the 66
th and 69
th minutes to keep the 2-1 lead. After a back-and-forth battle in the second half, the Panthers were called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Lewis in the 81
st minute. Meyer came up with a save on the penalty to preserve the lead. The Panthers continued to defend and secured their second win of the season.
