Panthers Sweep Double Dual From SBU, William Jewell

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Drury men's and women's swimming and diving turned in dominant performances to sweep double-dual wins from Southwest Baptist and William Jewell Friday evening at Breech Pool.

Ranked No. 1 in the latest College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division II Top 25 dual meet poll, the Drury men turned in a 165-9 win over William Jewell and a 168-6 victory over SBU.

The DU women's squad, ranked third in the November CSCAA D-II poll, cruised past SBU by a 161-13 final tally and bested Jewell by a 156-18 count.

Highlighting the evening was Alvaro Zornoza's NCAA Division II record-setting performance in the men's 100 IM. The junior from Gijón, Spain turned in a time of 48.31, breaking Ben Sampson's (Colorado Mesa) D-II record of 48.51.
 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Drury women swept the top three places in the 200 medley relay, led by the team of Elvira Lonnberg Flores, Gwen Bergum, Juliana Harden and Petra Baumane, which clocked a time of 1:45.13 to claim the win.
  • The DU men followed suit, paced by a 1:31.43 time from the quartet of Zornoza, Elliot Weber, Belhassen Ben miled and Marwane Sebbata.
  • Colby Hughes picked up the win in the men's 1000 free, finishing in 9:21.85, with Leon Heberlein (9:30.68) placing second.
  • DU's Whitney Stortz and Rachel Omoruyi claimed the top two podium spots in the women's 200 free, turning in times of 1:59.97 and 2:00.72, respectively.
  • In the men's 200 free, Branden Lowe (1:43.27) and Max Hagl (1:43.42) finished 1-2 as well for the Panthers.
  • It was a clean sweep of the podium for the DU women in the 50 free, paced by Yevheniia Zhukova's 24.63; Rianne Rose (24.78) took silver, followed by Ashlyn Moore (25.03) in third.
  • The DU men doubled that feat, claiming the top six places in the 50 free; Yuri Cabral (20.35) took gold, followed by Austin Metzler (21.37) and Mike Jasinski (21.50).
  • Bergum added an individual win in the 100 IM, clocking in at 57.26, followed by Alyssa Freimanis (1:00.48) and Anastasiia Yermishyna (1:00.77).
  • Zornoza claimed the men's 100 IM with a time of 48.31, with Ivan Adamchuk (48.56) and Ben miled (50.48) rounding out the top three.
  • Ella Gunnarsson (1:00.29) picked up the victory in the women's 100 fly, with DU's Sophia Deane (1:00.52) and Sutton Paulsen (1:04.60) finishing second and third, respectively.
  • Drury dominated the men's 100 fly as well, with Bill Beckman (49.74) claiming gold, followed closely by Ben miled (49.79) and Lucas Mineur (49.83); in all, the Panthers claimed the top nine finishes in the race.
  • Bergum claimed a second individual win, this time in the 100 free with a swim of 52.61; Leticia Nunes (52.82) followed in second and Lonnberg Flores (54.63) finished third.
  • Adamchuk (45.71) picked up the victory in the men's 100 free, followed by Lucas Mendes Alvares (46.17) in second and Blake Nelson (47.18) in third.
  • Zhukova earned her second win of the night with her time of 57.92 in the 100 back, while Rose (59.50) placed second and Belen Morales (1:00.13) took third.
  • On the men's side, Sebbata (49.43) picked up the win in the 100 back, with Matteo Vissotto (49.93) finishing second and Hagl (50.94) taking third.
  • Omoruyi took the women's 500 free with a time of 5:20.80, with Giovanna Morganti (5:24.81) placing second for DU.
  • Hughes notched his second win of the night, taking the crown in the men's 500 free with his time of 4:31.47, with Heberlein earning his second silver of the meet with a swim of 4:36.53.
  • In the women's 100 breast, Lonnberg Flores (1:05.96) took home gold, followed by Ashley Leader (1:08.67) in second and Nunes (1:09.73) in third.
  • For the men, Joao Nogueira (54.33), Zornoza (54.92) and Weber (56.09) swept the podium for the Panthers in the 100 breast.
  • Drury swept the top three places in both 200 free relays, with the DU women (Baumane-Freimanis-Rose-Zhukova) turning in a time of 1:32.48, while the men's top squad (Vissotto-Mendes Alvares-Nogueira-Cabral) took gold with a 1:22.85 time. 
UP NEXT
Drury swimming will return to competition Jan. 16, when the Panthers host cross-town rival Missouri State for the first of two duals on back-to-back days in Springfield. DU diving will return to action next weekend on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
