Panthers split with #7 Mo. Southern; Gales throws complete game

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury split their home opener with #7 Missouri Southern on Friday night. The Lions took game one, 5-3, Drury won the nightcap, 9-3 behind a complete game from Nick Gales on the mound.

Game One, 5-3
With the wind swirling and temperatures in the 30s, both Drury and MSSU got off to a slow start offensively.

The Lions were able to kickstart their offense in the 5th inning with a double to push across the game's first run. On the cold night, the bats would stay hot with Southern scoring four more runs in the next four innings and totaling 11 hits.

Drury would score one in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout. Paul Pratte would get his first career RBI to score Connor Bain.

The Panthers had seven hits in the game and left 11 stranded on the bases. Cody Bahl got the start for Drury. He pitched six innings, allowing one run and striking out eight. He was awarded the loss.

Game Two, 9-3
Game two had the bats swinging early. The Panthers punched first with a Hesston Gray RBI scoring Luke Matschiner in the first. Jackson Crider would add two more to the board in the 1st after his first career home run.

MSSU answered with three of their own following Drury's three. Two doubles and an error aided the Lions on their way to scoring. This would be the last time Southern would cross the plate in the seven-inning bout.

Drury added five runs to their total in the fourth inning. Wyatt Morgan scored the first run in the inning against his former school. Connor Bain, Landon Willbrand, and Matschiner would all score in the inning. Gabe Russell led the push with two RBIs.

The Panthers pushed one more in the sixth inning with a Hesston Gray sac fly ending the scoring at nine runs.

Drury did not have to go to the bullpen in game two with Nick Gales going a complete game with two earned runs and six strikeouts. Gales grabbed his first win of the season. Jackson Crider and Wyatt Morgan both went 2-3 in the game. Hesston Gray drove in three runs from the three-hole.
