Panthers split as the long ball gives Drury their first win of the season

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – On the first day of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic, Drury split in their two games with a loss to Southern Arkansas, 3-0, and a win against Newman, 4-2.
 
Game One vs Southern Arkansas
Southern Arkansas scored in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to give the Muleriders an early 1-0. Southern Arkansas kept putting runners on, but the Panthers were able to force nine runners stranded on base throughout the game.
 
The Panthers best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the 5th when Sophia Luetticke singled and advanced to second on an error. AJ Agers would fly out advancing Luetticke to third. Drury would go down on a strike out and a ground out not scoring any runs.
 
The Muleriders would score twice more in the seventh inning to extend their lead and grab the 3-0 win.
 
Jordyn Foley went the complete game got the loss for Drury. Natalie Wilks, Avery Budde, and Sophia Luetticke each got a hit for the Panthers against Southern Arkansas.
 
Game Two vs Newman
Newman got on the board early with an RBI single from Hannah Nordby that advanced Lauren McNaught to third in the bottom of the second. McNaught would then score on a double steal, giving the Jets an early 2-0 lead.
 
The bats would go quiet until the top of the fourth. AJ Agers would line out to right field scoring Landry Cochran. Taylor Hartsell would then be hit by a pitch to reach first then advance to second on a wild pitch. With two runners on, Victoria Garland would drill one to center field for Drury's first home run of the season. This gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead.
 
Kaley Adzick would shut down the Newman offense for the rest of the game, earning the win. Avery Budde would come in for the final inning and record the save. Adzick pitched six innings, striking two out and only allowing three hits.
 
Offensively, Budde went 2-4 with a run scored. Five Panthers batters each recorded one hit. Victoria Garland led the team with three RBIs.
 
UP NEXT
Drury will close the Alvy Early Memorial Classic tomorrow with two games against East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma State. The first pitch for the East Central game is 11 a.m.
