Quincy outlasts Drury in double-overtime thriller

QUINCY, Ill.— Quincy extended their winning streak to 12 games as they outlasted Drury in a double-overtime marathon, 104-94, at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois, on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers dropped to 16-6 and 12-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks went to 18-5 and 12-2 in the GLVC.

Quincy outscored Drury 14-4 in the second overtime as the Lady Panthers had four players foul out, including point guard Caitlynn Daniels, who was forced to exit less than two minutes into the first overtime, and Rhi Gibbons, who scored a career-high 28 points, late in the first OT.

Drury led by six with 4:27 remaining in regulation, but Quincy chipped away and tied the game at 77-77 with 1:16 left. Neither team scored down the stretch, pushing the game to overtime.

Daniels was called for her fifth foul of the game with an offensive foul less than 90 seconds into the first overtime period. Saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, Daniels played just 22 of the game's 50 minutes, finishing with nine points and five assists.

Drury fought to stay alive, though, and down by four with only 18 seconds left in the first overtime, Josie Storey connected on a three-pointer to bring the Lady Panthers within one, 88-87. After two made free throws by Quincy, Makaiya Brooks tied the game with a corner-three with six seconds remaining to force the game into a second overtime tied at 90.

The fouls and makeshift line-up then caught up to Drury. Quincy started the second overtime on a 7-2 run and the Lady Panthers could not recover.

"We had a great effort in the second half to come from 12 down to take the lead, but we couldn't get multiple stops in a row (in overtime)," said Drury head coach Kaci Bailey. "It's really hard when you have three or four players foul out and they didn't have any foul out. But T=there were a lot of little things we didn't take care of.

"Their zone also threw us off. They switched between a 1-3-1 and 2-3 and it took us out of our flow."

Gibbons was 11 for 20 from the field and six for eight from the foul line to finish with 28, while Brooks added 23 and was 4 for 9 from three-point range.

Cymriah Williams led Quincy with 22 points and she added 10 rebounds, while Mikayla Huffine scored 18 points.

Quincy, who leads the GLVC in rebounding margin, outrebounded Drury 58-42 and had 24 offensive boards, resulting in 15 extra shots for the Hawks. Quincy went 32 for 42 from the free throw line, while the Lady Panthers were 18 of 26 from the stripe.

While the win extended Quincy's winning streak to 12 games, it snapped Drury's winning streak against the Hawks at 16 games.

The Lady Panthers return home and will host Rockhurst on Thursday at 5:45 pm in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
