ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Late game surge in game two earns Drury a split against Missouri Western State on the road on Wednesday night. The Griffons won game one, 6-3, and the Panthers, 5-4, in game two. Drury moved to 19-17 as Missouri Western improved to 20-15.
GAME ONE
Both the Panthers and the Griffons started slow with a combined three hits in the first two innings unable to capitalize on any base runners.
Drury was the first team to plate a run in the third inning.
AJ Agers came up to hit with the bases loaded and singled through the right side to score
Sophia Luetticke and
Landry Cochran, for the game's first two runs.
Victoria Garland added to the Drury advantage to lead off the fourth with a solo home run to put the Panthers up 3-0.
Missouri Western would go on to score six unanswered runs. Two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth to give the Griffons the 6-3 win.
After the Garland homer, Drury recorded four hits in the final three innings of play.
AJ Agers,
Taylor Hartsell, and
Victoria Garland all had multiple hits in game one. Agers also pitched her third straight complete game in the loss. Agers struck seven out on 116 pitches.
GAME TWO
The Griffons rode their hot bats from game one to game two scoring two in the first for an early lead.
AJ Agers gave Drury their first run of the game on a solo homer in the fourth inning over the left field wall.
Missouri Western responded to the Agers homer with two in the bottom of the fourth inning, to hold their lead at 4-1.
The Panthers did what the Griffons did to them in game one: They went on a run to score four unanswered runs to end the game.
In the sixth,
AJ Agers would score once more on a passed ball. Not long after
Brooklyn LaChappa would score on a wild pitch.
Entering the seventh still trailing by one, Drury did what it had done three other times since the start of March, make a come-from-behind win in the sixth inning or later. The Panthers scored two on an RBI single from
Taylor Hartsell to score
Sophia Luetticke. Hartsell would then score two batters later on an RBI from
Brooklyn LaChappa.
AJ Agers went 2-3 in game two with two runs scored. In the circle,
Jordyn Foley got the start going four innings and striking six out.
Natalie Wilks was rewarded the win with a three-inning performance of one-hit pitching.
