Drury opens series vs. UMSL with 10-4 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— A six-run fifth inning lifted Drury past Missouri-St. Louis 10-4 on Saturday night at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park. The Panthers improved to 19-14 and 9-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Tritons dropped to 17-16 and 7-10 in the GLVC.

Missouri-St. Louis scored three runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game at 4-4, but Drury responded with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Panthers took the lead on a bases-loaded walk to Landon Willbrand and took a 6-4 lead on a ground ball from Wyatt Morgan. With two outs in the inning, Jackson Crider belted a two-RBI double to put Drury ahead by four. Gabe Russell connected on another double to drive in Crider and Russell would later cross the plate in the inning on a wild pitch.

Cody Bahl (1-3) went seven innings to get the win for Drury. The graduate student from Lee's Summit allowed seven hits and four runs while walking three and recording five strikeouts. Will Newberry (0-1) took the loss in relief for UMSL.

Crider went 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs and Carter Wambach went 2 for 3 with two runs and two walks.

The Panthers took advantage of 10 walks and two hit batters from Tritons pitchers during a game played through light rain and wind chills in the mid-30s.

The four-game series between the two teams continues on Sunday. The first pitch for Sunday's game has been moved to a 3 pm start and the four-game set concludes with a doubleheader on Monday at noon.
