SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Missouri-St. Louis squashed a Drury threat in the ninth inning and hung on for a 4-2 win over the Panthers on Sunday at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park.
Drury fell to 19-15 and 9-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Triton snapped an eight-game losing streak and went to 18-16 and 8-10 in the GLVC.
UMSL broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth scoring on a bases-loaded passed ball to take a 3-2 lead. They added another run with a sacrifice fly from Mitch Bonczkowski to go ahead 4-2.
The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the ninth with two singles that put the tying run on base with one out, but Drury stranded both runners as Tritons starter Bryce Nicolay got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Nicolay (3-1) fired a complete game, going nine innings, allowing eight hits, two runs, and one earned run with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Brady Childs (0-1) took the loss in relief.
Luke Matschiner went 2 for 4 with a run and stolen base for the Panthers. Drury out-hit Missouri-St. Louis 8-6 but stranded seven in the loss.
The win by the Tritons evened the four-game series at 1-1 after Drury's 10-4 win on Saturday.
The series concludes on Monday with a doubleheader starting at noon at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park. The four-game was pushed back one day by inclement weather the doubleheader was moved to Monday due to winter conditions on Sunday.
