Tritons take two on final day of series against Panthers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri-St. Louis took two on the final day of the series against Drury on Monday at Mark Worley Field. The two losses dropped the Panthers to 19-17 and improved the Tritons to 20-16.

GAME ONE
The Panthers cracked the score sheet in the first in on a wild pitch that scored Gabe Russell who was on after a fielder's choice.

UMSL answered in the second, scoring one on an error by the Panthers.

Neither team scored again until the sixth when the Tritons added one on a single into left field. Drury responded to their deficit with one of their one. Luke Matschiner singled into center field to score Carter Wambach.

With the game knotted at two after seven innings, extra baseball began. UMSL knocked in a pair in the eighth inning. The Panthers tied it in their half of the inning after Matschiner singled to load the bases, Landon Willbrand hit a rocket just past the diving first baseman to score Hesston Gray and Dominic Wuertz.

UMSL added five in the ninth inning. Down to their final out with the bases loaded, Paul Pratte pinch-hit for Cannon Stuckey. Pratte was walked to score one. A pitching change from the Tritons caused Landon Willbrand to wait his turn. Willbrand would double to clear the bases but would be thrown out at third base trying to extend the play. Drury would drop the game 9-8.

There were 20 Panthers to touch the field in the extended game. Jackson Crider and Luke Matschiner each went 3-4. Landon Willbrand had five RBIs in the game. Gage Hayes got the start going 5.2 innings, allowing two runs only one earned. Kade Biellier, Zach McKinnis, Klayton Kiser, and Nick Panagos, all pitched out of the bullpen. McKinnis was the losing pitcher after giving up three in one inning of work.

GAME TWO
Similar to game one, Drury struck first in game two on a solo homer from Jackson Crider in the first inning.

In the top of the second, UMSL scored three. One off a groundout to shortstop and two on an error from the Panthers.

Drury tightened the game in the third inning when Luke Matschiner had an infield single with the bases loaded to score Wyatt Morgan from third.

Gabe Russell doubled down the right field line to score Wyatt Morgan from second to tie it at three in the bottom of the fourth. Carter Wambach would give Drury the lead after a single to the shortstop that scored Jackson Crider.

A two-run home run from Missouri-St. Louis in the top of the fifth gave the Tritons a 5-4 lead.

The Panthers would not score again with only one batter in the final three innings reaching second base. UMSL added two more runs to secure the 7-4 win.

The Drury offense was led by Gabe Russell who was 3-4. Jackson Crider also tallied two hits and a home run. Markell Dixon started and was given the loss after 5.1 innings, four earned runs, and five strikeouts. Joey Funk and Jacob House also pitched.
