SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Katelynn Young's two first-half goals lifted Southwest Baptist over Drury at Lake Country on Wednesday evening.
A slow opening 25 minutes of the match changed when the Panthers played the ball into their defensive zone and a bad defensive deflection gifted Katelynn Young an open net. Young was able to tap it in to open the scoring in the 26th minute.
The Bearcats held possession for the next five minutes after the Young goal. Off a pass from Juana Fernandez Calvo, Young lofted a shot from outside the box just beyond the reach of
Katy Fitzler to extend the Bearcats' advantage to 2-0.
Trailing by two in the second half, Drury turned up the pressure in the attacking third, taking seven shots over the final 45 minutes, but the Bearcat defense and CeCe Alexander held strong and did not concede a goal.
Keira Love had the Panthers' best opportunity of the night in the 70th minute, splitting the SBU defense but unable to get a shot off as Alexander closed on Love and took the ball away inside the six-yard box. The Panthers were unable to find a breakthrough, as Southwest Baptist earned the 2-0 victory.
