LEBANON, Ill. – Seventh-seeded Drury's season ended Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to second-seeded McKendree in the opening round of the GLVC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
The Bearcats controlled the opening half, taking 10 shots to Drury's one. Only one of McKendree's first-half attempts was on goal, a ninth-minute shot that was handled by
Katy Fitzler.
McKendree also rattled the frame twice in the opening half, keeping Drury under pressure in the defensive third.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Drury controlled possession for much of the opening 10 minutes after halftime and took four shots, including two from
Melissa Higgins.
The momentum shifted again in the 58th minute when McKendree made a run into the penalty area and drew a Drury foul, setting up a penalty kick for the Bearcats. Zoe Cormier took the attempt, shooting left as Fitzler dove right, to give McKendree a 1-0 advantage.
Following the McKendree goal, Drury increased its offensive pressure in search of the equalizer. A majority of the final 32 minutes were played in the Panthers' attacking third, but Drury was able to manage only two shots during that stretch.
The Panthers were unable to find the back of the net, as McKendree held on for the 1-0 victory.
