Panthers Run Away With Series-Opening Victory Over Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Drury baseball used a big first inning and a 13-run fourth-inning outburst to run away with a 25-6 seven-inning victory over Lincoln Friday afternoon in the opening game of the two clubs' Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Vivion Field.

The Panthers (14-12, 5-4 GLVC) tallied five unearned runs thanks to a pair of Blue Tiger errors in the opening frame to build a 5-0 lead, then put the game on ice in the fourth, sending 18 batters to the plate in their biggest inning of the season.

Greydon Miller matched a Drury single-game record by scoring five runs as part of a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Additionally, three Panthers posted three-hit performances, keyed by Jackson Edwards' five-RBI afternoon, as Drury posted its best single-game scoring effort since a 27-12 victory over Rockhurst on April 2, 2021.

On the mound, Kaleb Thomas (4-1) turned in a dominant effort as well, as the junior right-hander allowed just one run on three hits over the first five innings. Thomas struck out a Drury career-high nine hitters while scattering three runs on five hits over his 6.0 frames.

DU wasted little time in grabbing a commanding lead after Luke Matschiner reached on a Lincoln error to open the contest, stole second and came around to score the first run of the day on Logan Reidelberger's RBI-single through the right side. Miller delivered the first of his four hits on the day to drive home a second run, before Colin McClure singled to plate another baserunner. Edwards capped the rally with a two-run single to center, handing the Panthers a 5-0 cushion.

After the Blue Tigers (6-17, 0-9 GLVC) put their first run of the day on the board via a Tim Fleming second-inning homer, the Panthers went back to work, scoring 15 runs over the next two innings. Connor Bain's leadoff home run -- his sixth round-tripper of the season -- and Edwards' run-scoring grounder highlighted a two-run rally in the third.

Matschiner once again got the ball rolling for DU in the fourth, this time with a base hit and another steal of second to open the onslaught. Jackson Crider drove him home with a base hit, and Carter Wambach made it a 10-1 game with his two-run single to right-center. McClure and Edwards came through once more with RBI hits, before Landon Willbrand's double plated the sixth Drury run of the inning.

The Panthers weren't done, as a Matschiner sacrifice fly and a Bain two-run double extended the margin to 15 runs. Miller drove in a pair with his single to left-center, and the duo of McClure and Edwards struck again, with each recording his second RBI-single of the rally, giving DU a 20-1 advantage.

DU added to its lead on Reidelberger's RBI-double in the fifth, before putting up four more runs in the top of the seventh to build a 25-3 bulge. The Drury bench accounted for all four of those runs, with Dominic Wuertz delivering a two-out, two-run single, before Zach Ericsson belted a two-run homer in his first official at-bat of the season.

In addition to big days from Miller and Edwards at the plate, McClure and Bain each drove in three runs with matching three-hit afternoons, while both Crider and Wambach reached base safely in four of their five trips to the dish.
