Panthers Sweep Doubleheader to Secure Series Win Over Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Drury baseball rode the combination of shutdown pitching and timely hitting to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Lincoln Saturday afternoon at Vivion Field. The Panthers outlasted the Blue Tigers 3-2 in the opener, before scoring 14 times in the first two innings of game two en route to an 18-7 rout that handed DU its third-straight win over Lincoln.

Carter Wambach paced the Drury (16-12, 7-4 GLVC) offense with four hits in six at-bats on the afternoon, while Connor Bain homered for the seventh time this season and drove in six runs in the two Panther victories. DU pounded out 20 hits for the second time in three games against Lincoln, with seven different Panthers recording multi-hit performances in the nightcap.

On the mound, three DU relievers -- Nick Panagos, Anthony Vita and Markell Dixon -- combined to strike out 14 Blue Tigers over 8 2/3 combined shutout innings.

Game 1 - Drury 3, Lincoln 2 (7 inn.)
Bain powered the Drury offense in the opener, driving in all three Panther runs, including a two-out, two-run double in the fifth that turned a 2-1 deficit into a one-run lead.

Drury broke on top with a first-inning run via a Bain sacrifice fly after Jackson Crider doubled with one out against Lincoln starter Brody Kleffner (2-5).

Lincoln (6-19, 0-11 GLVC) countered with single tallies in both the second and third frames to take a one-run lead. The Blue Tigers manufactured their first run courtesy of an infield single and three walks -- the last of which came with the bases loaded -- to tie the game in the second. Tim Fleming led off the third with his second home run in as many games against Drury, handing the Blue Tigers their first lead of the weekend.

After Drury starting pitcher Caden Crask-Weeks struck out six and limited Lincoln to those two runs on three hits over his 3 1/3 innings, Panagos shut down a Lincoln rally in the fourth, striking out back-to-back hitters with a pair of baserunners in scoring position to keep it a one-run game.

Following Bain's go-ahead double, Panagos (3-0) kept the Blue Tigers at bay, working around a pair of two-out singles in the fifth, as well as a Lincoln threat in the home half of the sixth. Dixon closed out the victory for his second save of the season, striking out two of the four hitters he faced.

The three Drury hurlers combined to strike out a season-high 13 hitters in the victory. Additionally, the DU defense played error-free baseball for the fourth time in its last five GLVC contests to help secure the win.

Game 2 - Drury 18, Lincoln 7 (7 inn.)
After relying heavily on its pitching and defense in the opening game, Drury turned to its offense to set the tone in game two. Luke Matschiner keyed that effort with his leadoff home run in the first, sparking what would turn into a four-run rally.

Greydon Miller added a two-run double, before the first of Wambach's three hits in the game -- and an extended rundown -- allowed the fourth DU run to cross the plate.

Lincoln answered in the home half of the inning slicing the margin to a single run on Jayden Little's three-run homer off DU starter Landon Martin.

Drury had a response of its own, striking for 10 runs on nine hits, plus a pair of Blue Tiger errors, in the second to built a double-digit lead. Bain blasted a three-run shot to left-center, before Colin McClure added an RBI-single. Landon Willbrand drove in a pair with his double to center, and Matschiner followed suit with a two-run single to give DU a nine-run cushion. Reidelberger completed the rally with his third home run of the season -- a two-run shot to right that made it a 14-3 game.

Given the sizable lead, Vita (2-0) followed the lead of Panagos and Dixon in the first game by closing out the victory with five dominant innings of relief work. The freshman lefty took over for Martin to start the third inning and allowed just four baserunners the rest of the way -- two of which came in his first inning of work. Vita retired nine-straight LIncoln hitters at one point and fanned a career-best seven batters to earn the victory.

The Panthers added an unearned run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, using another two-run double from Miller and a McClure RBI-grounder to cap their scoring.

Both Wambach and Reidelberger turned in three-hit efforts, while Miller drove in four and Matschiner and Bain added three RBIs apiece to pace DU's 20-hit attack.
