11 Panthers Record Hits as Panthers Roll Past Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – Drury found their way back into the win column after a sweep of Upper Iowa on Friday (April 10). The Panthers improved to 17-22, while the Peacocks fell to 5-31.
 
GAME ONE- Drury 9, Upper Iowa 0
Entering play, Drury had dropped seven straight games, averaging only four runs per game; it was imperative for the Panthers to get on the board early in game one against Upper Iowa.
 
Landry Cochran was the game's first base runner with a one-out triple. Following back-to-back errors from the Peacocks, Cochran scored, putting Claire Nelson on third and Kaley Adzick on third. Drury added a second run on an Isabel Ervin sac fly to drive in Nelson.
 
After putting the Peacocks down in order, Drury extended their lead to five runs in the top of the second inning. The Panthers scored all three of their runs in the second inning with two outs, with RBIs from Landry Cochran, Claire Nelson, and Kaley Adzick.
 
Upper Iowa got their first base runner of the game in the bottom of the third with a walk, followed by a double, but were unable to convert on the early base runners.
 
Both teams' bats went quiet until the seventh inning when Drury added four runs to put the game on ice. A leadoff single from Kelsey Palmer brought Reece Anderson up, who doubled to drive Palmer in. Anderson scored two pitches later on a Madi Divis single. Landry Cochran and Kaley Adzick drove in their second runs of the game in the inning.
 
Jordyn Foley put Upper Iowa down in order to end the game and the Drury losing streak with a 9-0 win.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
  • Drury had 14 hits in the game compared to Upper Iowa's three hits.
  • Landry Cochran and Kaley Adzick each had three hits in the win. They were the only two with multiple hits.
  • Including Cochran and Adzick, ten Panthers had at least one hit.
  • Cochran was one home run shy of the cycle and had six total bases.
  • Adzick led Drury with three RBIs.
  • Two of the three hits from Upper Iowa came from the bottom four in their lineup.
  • Jordyn Foley picked up her eighth win of the season in the complete-game shutout. Foley struck out five batters in the 27 batters she faced.
  • Cara Farnam was the losing pitcher for Upper Iowa. Farnam pitched three innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and striking out seven batters.
  • Dorothy Ziebell pitched the final four innings, allowing four runs, walking three, and striking out one.
  • Drury had five hits with runners in scoring position; Upper Iowa only had five opportunities with runners in scoring position, and they had zero hits.
  • With two outs, the Panthers were 6-for-14.
 
GAME TWO – Drury 6, Upper Iowa 1
After being shut out for the ninth time this season, the Peacocks needed to find their first run of the day in the first inning. Upper Iowa was able to score one in the first inning with a leadoff walk and two singles.
 
Drury answered the early deficit with a two-run single from Madi Divis in the top of the second inning to take the lead.
 
Jump to the fourth inning, Madi Divis drove in a third run of the game on a sac fly to score Isabel Ervin after three singles to load the bases.
 
In a close game, 3-1, Drury was in search of insurance in the seventh inning. Gabrielle Bax singled to start the inning before being run for by Mykala Dodds. Emma Niemczyk followed Bax with her own single. Dodds and Niemczyk each advanced 60 feet after the Landry Cochran sac bunt. Kirsten Peterson cleared the bases with a double. Jacey Byler pinch ran for Peterson. Byler would score after a single from Isabel Ervin for the game's final run, 6-1.
 
GAME TWO NOTES
  • Drury had 11 hits in the game. It is only the second time this season that Drury has had at least ten hits in back-to-back games.
  • Upper Iowa had five hits in game two.
  • Isabel Ervin had three hits, one a double.
  • Emma Niemczyk and Kelsey Palmer each had two hits, all singles.
  • Madi Divis had three RBIs with only one hit.
  • Kirsten Peterson drove in two runs in her two at-bats.
  • Dani Laughlin and Kaitlin Foral were responsible for all five hits, three from Laughlin.
  • Kaley Adzick won her sixth game of the season in a complete game. She struck out four batters, allowing one run (none earned).
  • Adzick is one strikeout away from her 200th career strikeout and moving into ninth in program history.
  • With the win for Adzick, she is now tied for eighth in program history in career wins with 19.
  • Sara Reid pitched the complete game for the Peacocks. Reid struck out six batters.
  • Drury had seven hits with runners on base in game two.
  • Only two Panthers reached base to start an inning.
  • Upper Iowa outhit Drury with two outs in game two. The Peacocks had two hits and the Panthers one.
  • The Panthers won their second game this season with at least two errors after two in game two.
  • The sweep was Drury's second doubleheader sweep this season.
  • Upper Iowa has now dropped 12 straight games.
  • Drury has won ten straight against Upper Iowa, six under Brooke Gajewski.
