Bax’s Game One Blast Lifts Drury to Split with Truman State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.Gabrielle Bax's game one home run lifted Drury to a 3-1 win in the split with Truman State on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field in Springfield.

GAME ONE – Drury 3, Truman State 1
Jordyn Foley got the game one start 24 hours after throwing her first career no-hitter. Foley's hitless streak would not last long. On the third pitch of the game, Emily Wood drilled a home run over the center field fence.

After the lead-off home run, Foley settled in, allowing just four base runners the rest of the game, all on hits.

It took until the fifth inning for the Drury bats to wake up. It started with a pinch hit single from McKenna Becher, followed by two singles from Isabel Ervin and Kelsey Palmer to load the bases with zero outs. The Bulldogs turned a double play to eliminate two runners, but left runners on second and third for Gabrielle Bax. She would lift the 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to take the lead in the fifth, 3-1, and the eventual winning run.

The only hit after Bax's home run was a two-out single from Cassie Smith in the sixth inning.

GAME ONE NOTES
  • Both Drury and Truman recorded five hits in the game.
  • Four of the five hits came from the last four in the Drury batting order.
  • Kelsey Palmer was responsible for two hits.
  • Gabrielle Bax's home run was the second of the season for her.
  • Two of the five hits from Truman came from Cassie Smith.
  • Jordyn Foley won her 11th game of the season, striking out three batters in the process.
  • The win was her 21st as a Panther. She is currently tied for seventh all-time in program history with her teammate, Kaley Adzick.
  • Jayda Long was on the losing end for the Bulldogs. Long struck out and walked one batter.
  • Drury was two-for-three with runners in scoring position in the game, both in the fifth inning.
  • The Panthers' only hit with two outs was Bax's home run.
  • The win extended Drury's win streak to seven games.

GAME TWO – Truman State 1, Drury 0
Drury wanted to strike early on Truman in game two to keep their momentum. Isabel Ervin singled and advanced to second on a passed ball to open the second inning. She would be left stranded on third in the inning.

Truman had one hit up until the sixth inning. In the sixth, Cassie Smith doubled with two outs to give the Bulldogs life. Smith would score two pitches later on a bloop single from Katie Pilcher and break the seal. Truman was held to only that one run in the inning.

Trailing by one with six outs left, the Panthers needed life in the sixth inning. Sadie Christensen, pinch-hitting for Reece Anderson, walked to start the inning. Anderson would reenter to run for Christensen. Gabrielle Bax laid a sacrifice bunt to advance Anderson to second and bring the top of the Drury lineup up with Emma Niemczyk.

Niemczyk would make soft contact on the first pitch she saw to the pitcher. Madison Kluever, Truman's pitcher, threw the grounder to third to try to get out Anderson at third, but threw it away. On the throw, Anderson made an attempt to score but was thrown out at the plate for the second out in the sixth, taking away the Panthers' best scoring opportunity in the game.

Needing a run to tie in the bottom of the seventh, Drury went down in order to drop their first game since April 7, 1-0.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • Isabel Ervin's second-inning single was Drury's only hit.
  • Cassie Smith added two more hits in game two, half of Truman's hits in the game.
  • Kaley Adzick threw a complete game, striking out five.
  • Madison Kluever won her fourth game of the season in the circle, throwing a complete game one-hitter.
  • The Panthers had four opportunities with runners in scoring position. They had no hits.
  • Drury drops to 7-10 in one-run games this season.
  • In the loss, the Panthers had two errors. They are now 3-14 in games with at least two errors.
