PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 3 Pittsburg State swept Drury on Tuesday (April 7) evening behind mid game offensive outbursts. The Panthers fall to 15-22 with the two losses, as the Gorillas improve to 37-2.
GAME ONE – No. 3 Pittsburg St. 12, Drury 4 (5 inn.)
After a slow first inning for both teams, the Gorillas exploded for four runs in the second inning, behind three hits and a Drury error. The inning was capped off by a bases-loaded Heather Arnett triple to clear the bases.
Pitt State added one more in the third to extend their lead to five runs with a two-out double from Haili Igou.
Drury got their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a
Madi Divis pinch-hit double to lead the inning off.
Landry Cochran reentered for Divis following the double.
Kaley Adzick replaced Cochran two at-bats later with a double to drive Cochran in for the Panthers' first run of the game.
Into the top of the fifth inning, Pitt State extended its lead to 6-1. Drury answered with three runs, with doubles from
Reece Anderson and
Landry Cochran.
Claire Nelson also had an RBI single in the inning to bring the Panthers within two runs, 6-4.
Drury freshman
Faith Roberts, in her first career pitching appearance, held the second-highest scoring offense in Division Two to three runs.
The Gorillas had one more offensive outburst in the first game in the fifth inning. Pitt State scored six runs to walk off and run-rule the Panthers, 12-4.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Drury was outhit by Pitt State 12 to five.
- Landry Cochran, Madi Divis, Claire Nelson, Kaley Adzick, and Reece Anderson each had one hit.
- Four of the five hits for Drury were doubles.
- The Drury defense turned two double plays in the game.
- Haili Igou led Pitt State with three hits.
- Jordyn Foley started the game, going two innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (two earned), and striking out one. She ended up returning to the game in the fifth inning.
- Faith Roberts made her college debut with 2.1 innings of three-run pitching.
- Brie Chilton was only able to record one out while giving up four runs and two hits.
- Sailor Hall was the winning pitcher for the Gorillas. Hall went 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (one earned), and struck out two batters.
- Emma Crab recorded her second save of the season, just needing to face one batter.
GAME TWO – No. 3 Pittsburg St. 12, Drury 4 (6 inn.)
The first two and a half innings of game two were a pitcher's duel between
Kaley Adzick and Lexi Franklin, allowing just a single hit for each team.
Pitt State's offense woke up in the bottom of the third inning, scoring eight runs behind seven hits. All eight of the runs scored in the inning were scored with two outs.
Two more runs for the Gorillas were added in the bottom of the fourth, with a lead-off homer from Lexi Davis and another two-out score on a single from Taylor Lundien to drive in Haili Igou.
On the brink of another run-rule loss, Drury scraped across four runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Panthers scored their first run thanks to an error from Pitt State in the field.
Emma Niemczyk singled to drive in
Isabel Ervin.
Landry Cochran followed Niemczyk with a single to score
Gabrielle Bax and Niemczyk from first.
Trailing 10-4 at the top of the sixth,
Madi Divis reached base after being hit by a pitch. Divis advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches but was left stranded on third.
Bailey Haselhorst ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run walk-off home run, 12-4.
GAME TWO NOTES
- Drury had four hits in game two compared to Pitt State's 13 hits.
- All four of Drury's hits came from the top two in their order, Emma Niemczyk and Landry Cochran.
- The Panthers drew three walks in the loss.
- Alleyna Rushing led the Gorillas with three hits. Three others had two hits for Pitt State.
- Kaley Adzick started for Drury, recording the loss. She gave up six hits, seven runs, two walks, and struck out one batter.
- Natalie Wilks relieved Adzick for one inning, where she allowed four hits, three runs, two walks, and struck out one.
- Graham Cobb-Gulledge was the final Drury pitcher to see the circle. She went 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs. It was the longest outing of her career.
- Lexi Franklin was the winning pitcher for the Gorillas. Franklin allowed just two hits and struck out five hitters.
- Drury scored all four of their runs on Erica Schertz, who pitched the final two innings.
- The losses were Drury's seventh straight.
- It was the first time since Feb. 12, 2023, that Drury has played a top-five team in the country. The most recent meeting was against No. 1 Rogers State in the Alvy Early Memorial Classic, a 3-0 loss.
