ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Two second-half goals lifted Lewis to a 2-1 win over Drury at Lewis Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A controlled first half for Drury resulted in no goals for either team and only two shots for the Panthers. The best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes came off the head of
Carly Swan, who forced Jillian Barth to make a save off a corner kick in the second minute.
The Panthers opened the second half much like they played the first, keeping the ball on their attacking side of the field. In the 53rd minute,
Elli Davison received the ball in the corner and sent a cross to
Grace Pohl, who fired it past Barth for the match's first goal.
Following Pohl's goal, Drury maintained possession for the next four minutes until Lewis made a push that forced a Drury defender, a Lewis attacker and
Katy Fitzler to converge on the ball. Fitzler was removed from the match following the collision and did not return.
After the substitution in goal, momentum shifted to the Flyers. Drury turned the ball over in the defensive third in the 66th minute, allowing Lewis to find space and finish the equalizer.
Ten minutes later, Lewis' Anna Linsler placed a shot into the upper corner beyond the reach of
Taylor Thompson to give the Flyers a 2-1 advantage.
Trailing by a goal with 15 minutes remaining, Drury applied pressure offensively. In the 88th minute,
Leah McDonald's free kick struck the crossbar and bounced to
Bella Hernandez, but her attempt missed the target as Lewis held on for the 2-1 victory.
