The nationally 13th-ranked Drury soccer Panthers bounced back from a shutout two nights ago by posting one of their own, blanking William Jewell 3-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Senior Day at Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex.
Drury put this one away early, scoring three goals in the first 38 minutes en route to improving its mark to 13-3-0 overall and 11-3-0 in the GLVC. William Jewell fell to 3-11-3 and 2-9-3.
Nick Ammann, one of 10 DU seniors honored in pregame ceremonies, scored at the 11:25 mark off an assist from senior
Jack Mathis for a 1-0 lead, and the Panthers quickly made it 2-0 when
Charles Guelly scored his fifth goal (unassisted) at 20:29.
Senior
Scott Stiffler pushed it to 3-0 when he tallied his first goal of the season off a corner kick from Mathis at 38:43, and the Panthers sat several regulars in the second half in cruising to the victory, which maintained second place for DU after UMSL (10-3-1 in the league) and league-leader Quincy (12-0-2) battled to a scoreless draw on Sunday.
"I was happy with the result today," Drury coach
Ryan Swan said. "I thought we had a good first half and really controlled the tempo of the game. It was great to see all of our seniors step up and put in a good performance on Senior Day. They are a fantastic grouop of student-athletes and I hope that we can put together a post-season run for them all to remember."
Drury had 24 shots to just four by the Cardinals.Â
Drury will close the regular season on Wednesday by hosting Missouri S&T at Harrison/Curry in a 7:30 p.m. start. The Panthers have clinched the right to host a first-round GLVC Championships post-season match next weekend on a day and time to be announced.
