Emily Cline scored two goals and senior
Shelby Hatz added a third as Drury posted a 3-1 victory over William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Senior Day Sunday at Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex.
The Panthers improved to 9-4-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the GLVC with the win and clinched a spot in the league's eight-team, post-season tournament field which begins next Sunday on campus sites. Drury will close the regular season by playing host to Missouri S&T on Wednesday (5 p.m.) at Harrison/Curry.
Drury honored seniors Hatz,
Sarah Duffy and
Caitlin Redmond in pregame ceremonies, then watched Cline - a redshirt junior who would have been celebrating Senior Day with that trio had she not been granted a redshirt season due to injury - help make their day a victorious one.
Cline scored her fourth goal of the season off a
Rachel Krueger assist at 28:23 for a 1-0 advantage, but Jewell tied it just 3:35 into the second half when Jade Gifford scored her fifth off a penalty kick.
But Hatz answered with a PK goal at 59:59, her seventh of the season (and seventh in five game) to put DU up 2-1, then saw Cline add her fifth of the year (
Ashley Morefield assist) at 80:31 for the clincher.
"It was just a great win on Senior Day," Drury coach
Alf Bilbao said. "Those three kids have meant so much to me and the program, it's nice they will remember it in a positive way. I can't say enough, too, about
Emily Cline's performance. She gave a little extra for those three she came into Drury with."
Drury outshot the Cardinals (6-7-3, 5-7-2) by a 23-16 count, including 10-9 in shots on goal.Â
Tina Haberberger had eight saves in picking up the victory in goal for the Panthers, who will enter Wednesday's match vs. S&T in fifth place in the league standings to the Lady Miners' sixth (8-8, 8-6 in the league).
